What's in a name?
The Bombax tree, also known as the silk cotton tree, grows in tropical climates. The seeds of the tree are used as an agent in the production of clean water.
After blossoming, the buds are filled with cotton-like balls used to stuff pillows and mattresses. Bombax trees can grow to 130ft (40 metres) and have medicinal, culinary and traditional uses, including as an aphrodisiac.
Young Bombax trees have spiky trunks that shed in old age to reveal a smooth trunk with large butress roots that grow around any obstacles in their path. Associated with many myths, in India, the Bombax tree is believed to be the incarnation of the god Vishnu, the preserver and protector of the universe.
